What Is LVP/LVT Flooring?

Travertine tile and Italian marble, heartwood and ancient oak all have one thing in common. They are very desirable and quite expensive. Rather than install floors that cost tens of thousands, consider LVP and LVT flooring instead. It’s very affordable, easy to install, and still manages to look like you spent a fortune.

LVP Flooring

LVP stands for “luxury vinyl plank.” It is plank style flooring made to look like some of the most expensive woods and wood floors you can buy. Except this plank flooring is about one-quarter inch thick and snaps together quickly. You can install it over an existing floor, or pull all of the old floor out and install it over a waterproof membrane and base floor to reduce height and thickness of the floor overall.

LVT Flooring

LVT stands for “luxury vinyl tile.” These are tiles that are made of stone and stamped or designed in such a way that they look like expensive stone. Every tile snaps into place with the other tiles, and then grout fills the cracks in between. Just like other real stone tiles, a base layer of plaster and grout holds the tiles in place from underneath. It feels just like marble or travertine, except that it is made of a composite stone. The overall look of the tiles when the floor is complete is quite stunning.

Purchasing and Installing Your LVP or LVT

You will have to do a little math and measurement to figure out the total square footage of tile or plank you will need. A professional flooring installer can help you figure it out and show you some samples if you are interested in these types of flooring. If you’re doing more than one room, pick something different for each room so that you have a different look throughout your house.
